Do you have a goal that you want to achieve in the near future? A goal that, when you think about it, makes you happy and excited and makes you want to work towards it? Most people don’t have a clear goal – if you ask random people ‘What is your goal?’ they’ll probably ask what you mean. A clearly defined goal, written down, helps you to think in a new and powerful way. How do we set a goal that inspires us to grow?

People might say that their goal is to get more: a better job, a bigger house, more money. Now, one result of the goal may be that you accumulate more in your life and have nicer and better things. But the real purpose of a goal is to grow. It causes you to draw something out of yourself that you didn’t even know was there.

Bob Proctor always says that goals fall into three categories. He calls them A-B-C goals.

An A-type goal is something you already know how to do. For example, you go to the same network event every month. You already know how to do that. You know how to reach the goal and therefore you are going sideways. There is no real growth attached to that. A goal is something you’ve never done before. 

A B-type goal is something you have never done before but that you wouldn’t struggle to achieve. You make a plan and then say ‘If all of these things happen, then I can accomplish this’. For example, you want sales to go up by 5% in the next year, and you’ve calculated that that must be possible. 

Did you know that there is no inspiration to go after a goal like this? You get bored, feel uninspired or give up. If you really want to accomplish something, you need to be inspired. You’re going to have to draw on something that you haven’t drawn on before. It’s going to have to come from inside. 

A C-type goal is a ‘want’. It’s a vision, a dream, something that excites and scares you at the same time. Something that’s beyond your experience today. Because the true purpose of a goal is to help you grow in your awareness. Imagine you have all the resources you need and there are no limitations or restrictions, then ask yourself: ‘What do I want?’ Use your imagination and start to make a list. You don’t have to know how to get to your goal. The fun is in finding out how to get there.

As you become emotionally involved in the goal, your emotions will (by definition) get involved, and the expression of that emotional involvement will change your behavior. As your behavior changes, the results start to change, and your goal becomes a reality.    

Once you have decided what you want more than anything, that becomes the star you’re shooting for. That’s what you work towards, and you’re always trying to become more effective, so you raise your consciousness and you become aware of how to achieve it.

It’s not about the goal, it’s about who you become in the process. How you strengthen yourself and move towards what you want. When we’re working towards something, we’re alive. If we’re just working, we’re not having any fun. Goal achievers are productive individuals. They’re happy, they’re productive, they’re prosperous. They’re the ones who change the world.
